Why did I receive an ARCOM?

Event: Maintenance platoon Sergeant for the 69th Ordnance company and then Artillery Maintenance Advisor for the 559th United States Army Artillery Group. Instructed and advised unit commanders, commissioned officers and warrant officers, and noncommissioned officers.

Actions: Monitored Training, taught Classes, planned and monitored group exercises to test lessons learned. Reviewed and ordered and inspected unit publications, inspected equipment, oversaw group periodic maintenance. Studied, reviewed group training records, tested units, Inspected repair parts stockage and ordering practices, inspected decontaminants storage and shelf life, inspected equipment calibration. Pointed out unit weaknesses, recommended solutions, aggravated people. The work was never glamorous but necessary and rewarding.

Results: As stated on my Army Commendation, awarded 13 July 1987, "The combination of his inexhaustible knowledge and his leadership raised significantly the combat readiness of the 69th Ordnance Company. As maintenance Advisor for the Group, he shared his expertise with all subordinate units, resulting in a dramatic increase in proficiency across the Group.
